Someone talks to me on the bus

Normally on public transport, everyone stares discretely at their phone and plays some form of tetris. I read my kindle, listen to my music, look at other people listening to their music and playing their games. I forgot my ipod at work the previous day, so only had my books to keep me company. Perhaps... Continue Reading →

Places to Run in Hong Kong

Today I went for a 7.5 mile run. Much of it involved weaving through slow moving and wide pedestrians who don't feel the need to move out of your way even when you're running straight toward them, some of it on a race track, some of it dodging cars. My goal had been to go... Continue Reading →

Snake Paraphernalia!

Chinese New Year: means stuffed snakes, red tassels and posters all over the place!! This was definitely my favorite:   Only a few weeks from the holiday! I'm glad the snakes look like characters from a children's cartoon.

A new holiday

This past week, we de-christmased our flat. We still have our new years' hats, but that doesn't count. It was epiphany, and therefor the decorations had to come down. No more garish tinsel, no more santa hats on the TV, no more ribbons littering the room. The tiny Christmas tree is tucked in the closet... Continue Reading →

Rooftop Trains

I have been taking an interlude to play with my new computer, and, more importantly, get used to my drawing software once again. I was thinking about what I should start off with, and so I flipped through the journal I keep of random thoughts as I walk about town, and saw that I had... Continue Reading →

Christmas, Cats, and Trams

For the holiday we were cat-sitting a feline named Veronica. She is a gorgeous grey with stripes and a bushy tail, almost like a fox. I have never had a mammalian pet, and I was utterly fascinated. She is quite playful, so we made her toys; she would catch them and then forget about them,... Continue Reading →

Holidays

It's the holiday season! It has been since Halloween, really. Hong Kong is decked out in fake snow and a plethora of poinsettias. It is actually mostly tasteful. There are lovely blooming poinsettias lining my street and in my office. Some stores have tasteful decor-the Cartier store is lovely with thick greenery and lights, for... Continue Reading →

Money

This week in Hong Kong I received my electricity bill and it was a whopping zero dollars. It said: "please pay this amount: 0.00" We used 95$ worth of electricity, and the HK government subsidy is 150$. Our bill resulted in a negative balance.I took some rugs to the dry cleaner, and she noticed I... Continue Reading →

Strangeness in advertising

Hong Kong has some of the most fascinating advertisements in the world. I think this mostly because I live here, and don't see much other advertisement. However, there are some decidedly weird things going on. One of these is in mannequins. One street at which I enjoy eating, has a clothing store whose mannequins wear... Continue Reading →
