Beguiling Cambodia

I was in Cambodia last week, and it was stunning. It was a little more crowded than usual, from what I hear, because of Chinese New Year, but it was a good time to go. It’s now back to work and normal routines. I don’t really know what I was expecting when I went. I... Continue Reading →

Happy February!

This is an exciting month around here. Last weekend was the opening of the Six Nations rugby (I cheered for Ireland and England, both won), Pete's birthday, and a superbowl with a power outage that I did not watch. Next week is Chinese New Year, a trip to a new country, followed quickly by my... Continue Reading →

10 bazillion buddhas

Erica and I went out on the light blue line yesterday to see a place called "Ten Thousand Buddhas." It is called this because it has roughly 13,000 statues of Buddha, with varying facial expressions, hair, posture and face paint. I thought it was fun and exciting and here is a gallery of many portraits... Continue Reading →

Being abroad during major events

This week Hurricane Sandy is descending upon the North East US. My family and friends are there, watching the storm, prepped for power outages and hoping trees don't fall into their homes.  Harvard closed its campus for the first time in 34 years; I don't get to enjoy it, but all my friends who are... I encounter an overweight American

An odd thing happened when we had nearly finished our dinner at Big Bite yesterday and had started looking at youtube on a smartphone: a man near the cashier started yelling. Our first response was "oh, shut up, we're trying to watch a video." Quietly, of course. Then we looked, and realized there might actually... Continue Reading →

Beach Parties

On Sunday night I may have accidentally crashed a child's birthday party. I think her dad's name is Mike. I never met him, or her. We were on Lantau, which is another tropical island nearby, staying with our friend, and had gone down to the beach to join Lantern Festival barbecues. There were many barbecues... Voting

I mailed in my ballot today. All in all, it was a dissatisfying experience. I don't like many policies that are currently enforced, and I don't like the mistake ridden Republican rhetoric. So the decisions were a bit muddled. I did not vote for a candidate who voted for the Defense Spending bill in December.... Continue Reading →

Bars in Mandarin

We had Mandarin class this morning, and it turned into a discussion of bar vocabulary: "drunk," "wine," "beer," "bar," "a bar called peach." We now know 9 verbs: want, have, am, eat, drink, go, like, call, miss. Maybe some others too. The adjective are varied and delightful: drunk, happy, excited, confident, tired, lazy, small, patient,... Continue Reading →

Abandoned village

A couple weeks ago I went hiking in Sai Kung. We were going to hike parts of the Maclehose, and end at a ferry pier to head back to the MTR. We went to the ferry pier, and discovered we had more than an hour before our boat. Chek Keng pier was at the end... Continue Reading →

Canadian Hamburgers in Hong Kong

About a 10 minute walk from my flat, there is a Canadian burger restaurant. I had never seen a restaurant advertised as 'Canadian' before, so I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. We heard it was a burger joint, and that was all. A review posted online proclaimed: "the soup was good."  Someone went to... Continue Reading →
